National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) is an exciting, action-packed program designed to provide scouts with leadership skills and experience available to scouts who have attained the rank of First Class and will be 13 years old at the start of the course. Troop 21 requires the completion of NYLT to be eligible to hold either the Senior Patrol Leader (SPL) or Assistant Senior Patrol Leader (ASPL) positions.
The Big Horn NYLT Course is an intense, youth oriented program conducted by highly qualified youth staff under the supervision of adult advisers using the National Youth Leadership Training Course Syllabus, as published by the National Council, Boy Scouts of America. The course models a month in the life of a unit – four meetings (one each day for the first four days) and multiple unit meetings all leading up to a culminating outdoor experience – an overnight outpost camp.
Attending scouts should be experienced campers with good camping, hiking and outdoor cooking skills. They should have held a leadership positions in the unit, if possible, or be considering a positions in the near future. Applications are available at the link below and at the offices of the Denver Area Council. Scouts from Troop 21 will be split up and placed in patrols with participants from other troops/crews, therefore the only benefit to coordinating which week to attend is transportation to and from Tahosa – choose the week which works best for you.
Each scout is responsible for registering individually via doubleknot Click Here to Register and attending a pre-course orientation session.

If you have signed up to attend NYLT, before you come on course, Mrs. Stacy Mullen (home phone – 303-895-1560, 6pm to 9pm) must receive the Big Horn Med Form (BSA form 680-001, 2011 printing, Rev. 2/2011) with parts A,B&C completed and signed by a doctor at least 30 days prior to the start of your training. The linked form above is the only version of the BSA med form Big Horn accepts, there are no exceptions. Any other version submitted will be rejected and she will request you submit the proper med form. Med forms now have to be filled out EVERY YEAR, regardless of the age of the Scout.
She keeps track of all participants for all five weeks plus about 100+ staff members. This equates to a lot of email and phone time if the med form is not filled out correctly, so please be diligent in completing. Also, please fill out and submit the Big Horn Over-the-Counter Med Form.
You can submit the med and OTC forms one of four ways:
• Scan and email it to me Stacy@ColoradoJusticeNow.com
• Fax it to me at 303-825-2224
• Mail it or drop it by my house at:
Mrs. Stacy Mullen
1330 Teller Street
Lakewood, CO 80214
Note: She only needs the med form submitted one time by only one of the methods above.
Upon completion of the course, the troop will reimburse 1/3 of the registration fee. Denver Area Council strongly believes “no youth shall be denied a program experience because of lack of funds” and provides partial scholarships for those in need of financial assistance. The Scholarship Form must be submitted to the Denver Area Council no later than 30 days prior to start of your training.
